This single family home in Northern VA consists of 14,000SF of sleek contemporary architecture. The project includes a subterranean movie theater, 2 story glazed curtain wall, atrium, and large cantilevered balconies. The client chose 9'x3' tile slabs throughout the residence and sliding glass doors up to 32' wide. Additionally, the main rooms of the house are open concept, measuring 25' wide.

The demanding requirements of this building requires close attention be paid to the deflection of the members so as to avoid cracking of the finishes or binding of the doors. Griggs Engineering identified these challenges early during the schematic design phase and worked with the client to evaluate different construction techniques. Concrete, steel, wood, and CLT were all considered for this project but a blend of prefabricated wood trusses and steel was chosen.

Griggs Engineering provided additional construction administrative services helping the client prepare the site for steel erection and providing regular coordination meetings between multiple design disciplines and construction trades.
